Chapter History
Shelby Area Alumnae Chapter
On January 8, 2022, Brenda Carter Taylor and Judy H. Tramble met to explore the possibility of establishing an additional chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in Shelby County, Alabama. As a gesture of sisterhood, on March 5, 2022, the leadership of the two existing local chapters was informed of this interest, and Taylor and Tramble were designated as Points of Contact.
The two leaders convened multiple times to discuss strategies, conduct research, and formulate a plan to initiate the chartering process. To assess the interest among Sorors in the community, a meet-and-greet was held on June 11, 2022, at the North Shelby Library, attracting 72 attendees. It became clear that there was sufficient interest to move forward, and the group was named the Shelby Area Interest Group.
SAIG conducted a survey within the community to evaluate local needs. After assessing the skills and talents of the Sorors, connecting with community leaders, and leveraging existing relationships, SAIG was confident in its ability to address community needs. The group divided into smaller teams to work on the chartering application. Following five meet-and-greet events and numerous Zoom meetings, the application was submitted on February 23, 2023. On August 17, 2023, SAIG received notification that the application was deemed “viable.” The contributions from the Champions and their teams effectively positioned us to complete the final steps of the application process.
